Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Snake Butte is a laccolith intrusion. The igneous rock that formed this intrusion is the same stone quarried at the site. Numerous springs occur on the butte. A well known spring occurs on the north face and this spring is used by local residents for fresh drinking water. Another spring on the east face is developed for providing drinking water to the tribes buffalo herd. Snake Butte is drained by Three Mile and White Bear creeks, which drain into the Milk River. The Quarry site, located on the north side of Snake Butte, encompasses an area of approximately 1 mile long by 1.5 miles wide. Quarry operations not only modified Snake Butte by removing rock, but the area was also leveled to support the railroad grade. The railroad grade runs from the north face of Snake Butte to the Ft. Belknap Reservation boundary at the Milk River. Snake Butte was used by the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s to provide riprap for the building of the Fort Peck Dam in North Eastern Montana. Snake Butte is and was owned by the Fort Belknap Indian Community.
