Additional Property Attributes

The site is located at 101 and a portion of 333 North Dixie Highway in Monroe, Michigan 48162. It consists of one rectangular-shaped parcel that contains a total of approximately 1.97 acres (formerly addressed as 1209 East Elm Avenue) and approximately 1 acre of the southern portion of a larger northern adjoining parcel, 333 North Dixie Highway. The City of Monroe currently owns the site. The City of Monroe intends to convert the subject property into a Peace Park in coordination with the adjoining River Raisin National Battlefield Park.

Former Use: The subject property occupies land that is the site of the Frenchtown settlement, founded in 1787. The first and second battles of the River Raisin, and the subsequent massacre of over 60 American prisoners, occurred on January 18, 22, and 23, 1813 in the area of the subject property. The area of the subject property became agricultural land after the War of 1812. Between 1850 and 1915, the subject property was part of the Michigan Nursery Company operated by Isreal Epley Ilgenfritz. The River Raisin Paper Company built the first mill (West Mill) on the subject property and current northern adjoining property in 1915. Title to the western mill property was transferred to the City of Monroe, which demolished the vacant facility in 1991. 333 North Dixie was then transferred to the Monroe Building Authority in 1997. 101 North Dixie contains a passive park.
