Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: 2306 N. Main Street is occupied by a historic two story building with a basement constructed circa 1874 and a modern single story addition. The site is approximately 0.06 acres. In 1915, the site is depicted as a dwelling with a lumber yard, saw mill and grist mill located to the east of the dwelling. This facility was referred to as Williams Bros. Power Works. An addition was constructed in the 1970s along the western side of the building. Circa 1983 this space was converted to retail space. In 1997, the drinking water from the shallow well was found to be contaminated with gasoline constituents (SMS Site #971866). The well was connected to the drilled well at the property to the north. 2331 N. Main Street is approximately 0.84 acres occupied by an irregular shaped building with a paved parking area to the east and overgrown vegetation to the north. The building at 2331 N. Main Street appears to have been constructed in 1854 as a residence. In 1915 the building is depicted as an exchange and hardware store. There is an additional building depicted as a general store located on the eastern portion of the property. An undated photograph of this building indicates that the general store included gasoline sales and operated as a Gulf station. No records pertaining to underground storage tanks (USTs) or above ground tanks (ASTs) associated with the two observed dispensers were located. At some point, the general store was demolished; however, records pertaining to this building were not available for review. The property was purchased by Walter and Bette Genser in the 1970s and converted to a retail clothing store. A gasoline release originating from the adjacent property to the west was discovered in 1995 during road improvement activities, which impacted soil at the site (SMS Site #971866). Both buildings suffered a significant amount of damage in 2011 during Tropical Storm Irene.
