Former Use: Before 1981, Wellsburg�s Town Square was an open street (7th Street). The Town Square now serves as a government (Brooke County Courthouse and Wellsburg City Hall) and public activity center in Wellsburg�s Central Business and National Historic districts. The subject property is three wood joist two-story buildings (addressed 701 Charles St., 67 7th St., and 75 7th St.) situated on the north east corner of Town Square and Charles Street. Together, the structures occupy 2,831 square feet of mixed-use commercial and residential space. Each built in 1900, the structures intended use were to house commercial business on the ground floor and residential on the second. Recent business occupancy the ground floor included a barber shop, florist, law office, newspaper publisher, and an insurance agency. Currently, one service business occupies one of the buildings. There are no firm plans for cleanup. The URA is evaluating the possibility of purchasing the subject property for re-development. Potential sources for cleanup and renovation are the National Trust for Historic Preservation, West Virginia Historic Preservation Grants, Historic Preservation Tax Credits, and private investments.
