Additional Property Attributes

Located on the southwest corner of 6th Avenue and 9th Street, the Prichard was designed by architect H. Ziegler Dietz of Indianapolis. It had 300 rooms, each with its own bathroom, a rarity in hotels of that day. It also had 14 private dining rooms, a restaurant and a ballroom. Over the years the Hotel Prichard had some famous guests. In 1949, singing cowboy Gene Autry stayed there when he was in town for a show. His horse Champion slept elsewhere. But a chimpanzee named J. Fred Muggs was an honored guest in 1956 when the cast of television's "Today" show came to Huntington. John F. Kennedy, his wife Jackie and his brother Ted all stayed at The Prichard during JFK's 1960 presidential campaign. In 1970, Polan Realty of Huntington purchased the old hotel and converted it into offices and apartments. The Building was added to the National Historic Register in 1986.
In 2009, the building had 59 units, primarily with one to three bedrooms, and some efficiencies. The bottom of the building was occupied by a variety of businesses, including two restaurants, the Prichard Sandwich Shop and D.P. Dough's. Others included a microbiology consulting firm, an art studio, a church, a training facility for martial arts, a court reporting business and a massage therapy business. During the next several years the building fell into disrepair and by March 2015 tenants were told to vacate their apartments because city inspectors found numerous plumbing and electrical code violations in the building. The Building has been vacant since that time.

The restoration of the Prichard Hotel represents a joint venture between Cornerstone Development, a West Virginia nonprofit, IRC Section 501(c)(3) organization and Winterwood, Inc. a Kentucky for profit Women Owned Business, both of which are intent on promoting historic preservation and neighborhood beautification that strengthen a sense of place, increase community pride and spur local efforts for community improvement
The Project's objective is to restore the Hotel back to its original state by preserving the architectural integrity of the building and to provide senior housing and assisted living programs to the aging population. The development will provide useful residential spaces, service provision spaces and community resource areas
The Hotel consists of thirteen floors of useable space Each floor will provide a solution to problem that need immediate attention in the community.
(a) Basement- consists of 10,000 square feet of net leasable space that can potentially be used as a community kitchen, health and well- being facility which will consist of state-of-the-art exercise equipment, spa area, classrooms and exercise rooms.
(b) Floors 1-2; consists of 30,000 square ft. of useable space and will be used for service delivery, office space and a ballroom of 6,000 square feet
(c) Floors 3-13; will consist of 95,700 square feet of affordable housing.
