Additional Property Attributes

Comet Park was part of an area-wide Brownfields inventory conducted by the Department in 2015. The southeast corner of the park is the location of a former gas station. The city wants to incorporate this corner into the park as a veteran's memorial.

A ground-penetrating radar investigation revealed that the product lines from the pump island led to the eastern end of the building, indicating that the prior tank(s) was/were in this Ethylbenzene and naphthalene were detected in the surficial and subsurface soil, though both were at concentrations below the Department's Default Target Levels (DTLs). Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons-Gasoline Range Organics, -Diesel Range Organics, and -Oil Range Organics were all detected in the soil, but at concentrations below the DTLs. All but one soil sample, obtained from SB2 at the interval of 0-3' below ground surface, contained lead at concentrations below the average background levels for Jasper County. The sample from SB2 exhibited a lead concentration of 150 mg/kg, above the background level of 72.65 mg/kg but below the Department's Tier 1 Risk Based Target Level for residential use of 260 mg/kg. Groundwater was not encountered in the soil borings; therefore it was not sampled. As contaminants were below DTLs, or background levels, no further investigation was recommended.
