Additional Property Attributes

The Gold Nugget Market property is located south of Buena Road between the Yakima Valley Highway and Buena Road Extension.Efforts to assess or remediate contamination have stalled repeatedly or halted entirely, due to lack of funds and/or lack of a responsible party. The water table in the area is relatively high between three and six feet, and the majority of the community relies on shallow water wells and septic tanks. The community is made up primarily of low-income Hispani individuals.

Former Use: The Gold Nugget Market property is located south of Buena Road between the Yakima Valley Highway and Buena Road Extension. A gas station operated on the property from approximately 1966 to 1998, when the USTs were removed. All petroleum contaminated soil was reportedly removed, but contaminated ground water remains.Ecology conducted a site hazard assessment and a limited Phase II site assessment at the property in 2001. Ecology installed a series of ground water monitoring wells throughout the community in 1997 following contamination discovered by the Yakima County Public Works Department in 1993. Gasoline-contaminated ground water above cleanup standards was found in 1999-2001, although the tanks had been removed in 1998. The monitoring wells were sampled again in 2001 and 2008. Each sampling event confirmed gasoline, diesel, and lead in groundwater at concentrations above state cleanup levels.
