Additional Property Attributes

The property is a former rubber manufaturing plant that began manufactuing in 1929 and stopped operations in 2007. The city of Ravenna is using a Clean Ohio Assessment Fund Grant to further assess the property and hopes to clean up the site for pontential reuse. The scope of the TBA is to assess the surface water and sediments of Wahoo Ditch. It is reasonable to assume ground water beneath the property is hydraulically connected with the ditch. Past investigations have documented petroleum impacts to portions of Yahoo Dirch near the property. The property is situated in a mixed light industrial and residential area.

Former Use: The property is a former rubber manufaturing plant that began manufactuing in 1929 and stopped operations in 2007. In 1985, the White Rubber Company became The White Rubber Corporation during an ownership change. Portions of the manufacturing building two-story portion appear to have been constructed in 1929 on previously residential or vacant property. White Rubber began as a manufacturer of fountain pen sacs before turning to rubber glove production in the 1930s. During the next few years, White Rubber developed a new curved hand glove, installed a new glove testing machine and changed from acid-cure to a modern open steam cure. Additions were made to the physical equipment in the 1960s and a major addition was made to the manufacturing building. It was also decided in mid-1970s to produce high voltage rubber sleeves for electrical workers and further additions were made to the manufacturing building. In 1985, The White Rubber Company became The White Rubber Corporation during an ownership change. In 1987, an office building was constructed at the site. In 2002, a new solvent recovery system was installed to replace the existing system installed in the 1970s. The significant solvent use at the site for the past 75 years is a potential concern for the site, specifically in regards to the spill events reported in 1988, 1991, 1997 and 2004. However, according to the site contacts, chlorinated solvents have never been used at the site as this type of solvent would contaminate the solvent/rubber blend.
