Additional Property Attributes

Much of the island represents unique, essentially rare habitat on the north fork of the Skagit River. A small portion of the causeway is leased to a commercial boatyard. Near the boatyard the tribe plans to construct a tribal boat maintenance facility for use by tribal fisherman. Illegal dumping and storage of boats and other material has resulted in several areas of contamination. An additional area of contamination exists where open dumping occured several decades previously, and was then covered with earth. The causeway is the planned location of a "pocket estuary" wild salmon habitat restoration project.

Former Use: Natural island along with man made causeway over filled second class tidelands. Causeway improperly sold to non-Indians after causeway was created in early 20th century. US government purchased land (both causeway and island) in 1992 to quiet title and settle litigation. Land put into Tribal trust and became part of the Swinomish Reservation.
