Additional Property Attributes

The ribbon cutting for the Central Oregon Environmental Center learning garden was held on June 30, 2011. The event was well-attended and the project looks really good. In his remarks, Executive Director Mike Riley was extremely complimentary of both DEQ and EPA. He stated that DEQ had found 35K to conduct appropriate testing of the site soils to ensure it was safe for reuse as a teaching garden and that EPA offered good advice about various aspects of design and construction of sustainable community gardens. Mike also mentioned that DEQ and EPA were able to deliver this technical evaluation and assistance in the relatively fast turn-around i.e. for government of approximately 4 months. City Councilor, Jodie Barram also spoke about how this garden and the partnership with local school children will help achieve a strong, well-planned community consistent with the goals of Bend 2030 Vision Plan. The folks at the COEC, their volunteers, the kids involved, and others are definitely enthusiastic about urban agriculture and the part this garden is expected play.

Former Use: The property was used historically as a residential property until approximately 1996, when it was acquired by the City of Bend.
