The Site consists of approximate 4.2 miles of inactive rail corridor, comprising a total land area of approximately 35 acres. Commencing in downtown Leominster, MA in Carter Park, the Site extends in a northwesterly direction towards the downtown area of Fitchburg, MA. The rail corridor is located in close proximity to and runs parallel to MA State Route 12 North Main Street in Leominster and Water Street in Fitchburg. The Site is located in a heavily developed area and bisects or is surrounded by a variety of residential, commercial and industrial districts, as well as areas of open space. The Site comprises approximately 551,750 square feet of land in Fitchburg and approximately 966,000 square feet of land in Leominster. The Site traverses residential, commercial and industrial zoning districts in the two communities. The Fitchburg portion of the Site bisects 124 parcels, while the Leominster portion of the Site bisects approximately 419 parcels.

Former Use: The Site historically was utilized as a railroad corridor prior to the acquisition by CSX however it is currently inactive and the track and ties have been removed. The Site varies from 30 feet to 140 feet in width and was formerly utilized by Conrail for freight service to local manufacturing industries. The majority of the land is overgrown with brush and in general disrepair. The rail line was constructed around 1851 by the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company. The CSX Rail Corporation acquired the Site from Conrail on June 1, 1999 and incorporated it into the larger CSX network that traverses New England. In April of 2002, CSX proposed to discontinue service of the 4.2 mile portion of rail line and make it available to the Cities for development and use as a pedestrian trail.
