Additional Property Attributes

The site was a former auto and l salvage yard from the 1930s-1980s, and was acquired by the City of Fort Dodge in 1990. The city removed the debris, and the lot has sat vacant for many years. The Humane Society of North Central Iowa seeks to find a new site to build an expanded shelter for abandoned and stray dogs, cats, and domestic pets. The City is prepared to give the site to the Humane Society, but the Society sought to conduct an environmental due diligience process prior to taking title. As the Society is a non-profit entity, the DNR provided 128a funding to conduct a Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment on the property. While the former operation of a junk yard was a definite REC, no contaminants of concern were found in any concentration that would impede the reuse of the site, nor impact human health and the environment. The site is ready for reuse, and the Society will begin construction in the Spring of 2010.

Former Use: Acquired by City of Ft. Dodge in March of 1990. Prior ownership was Carney & Hancock Salvage, Inc.
