Additional Property Attributes

The City of South Haven intends to acquire the subject property and redevelop the site with a non-motorized pathway that will be part of a trail system that terminates at the trailhead of the Van Buren Trail State Park.

Former Use: The subject property consists of a single parcel of land occupying approximately 0.6 acres. The property historically contained an active rail line for C & O railroad. The rail line was subsequently removed from the subject property. The parcel has been vacant since railroad operations ceased in the 1980s. The parcel is currently owned by ELC Corporation, but the City of South Haven currently has a purchase agreement in place to acquire the parcel. The adjacent Belgravia site, located immediately west of the subject property, was developed in approximately 1916 for manufacturing purposes that included: woodworking, cyanide-based metal plating, pipe organ assembly, picture construction, and storage. Metal plating wastes were historically discharged to a septic tank and associated drain field located approximately 20 feet north of the Belgravia building. An above ground plating tank and floor drain within the building also discharged to the septic system. Plating activities reportedly ceased on site in approximately 1979.
