Additional Property Attributes

Famicos Properties, Ltd. owns and operates the Superior Avenue Apartments, which are located at 1850 Superior Avenue in the city of Cleveland. This property is utilized as permanent supportive housing for previously homeless, low-income residents. It was the first permanent supportive housing project in Cuyahoga County. In addition to 44 residential units, the facility employs nine individuals. Unfortunately, the Apartments are located adjacent to a dry cleaning operation that appears to have contaminated the soil and groundwater in the area. Famicos has funded multiple environmental assessments to ascertain and delineate the extent of the chlorinated solvent impact. The environmental testing indicated the chlorinated solvent vapors have penetrated the basement, which is an endangerment to the health and safety of the residents and staff. Currently, Famicos rents a soil vapor extraction SVE system, which was installed in the basement of the Apartment building. The SVE system mitigates the chlorinated solvent vapors to an acceptable level and creates a safe working and residential environment. Famicos has requested funding through the Countys USEPA ARRA BRLF grant to purchase the existing SVE system. In addition, Famicos would like to replace the concrete basement floor and to install a vapor barrier. During discussions with Ohio EPA and USEPA, it was determined that a better remedy for the site was the installation of a sub-slab depressurization system, as opposed to acquisition of the existing SVE system. In addition to installation of the SSD, a vapor barrier will be installed and the concrete floor in the basement will be removed and re-installed.

Former Use: The property has been an apartment building/rooming house since it's initial development in the late 1800s.
