Additional Property Attributes

This site is an old landfill site. Elders in the community of Port Heiden reported seeing abandoned vehicles, batteries, scrap metal and wood, animal carcasses, 55-gallon drums and trash on the site in the past. The trash and debris at the site was reported to be covered over with soil in the 1980's. After the trash and debris was buried, the site continued to be used as a place to store 55-gallon drums and other materials. Historically, the military could have used this dump as well. In October of 2004, three monitoring wells were installed within the center of the landfill by Burns Consulting Services. Funds to install the wells were obtained through the Tribal Association Solid Waste & Emergency Response TASWER. The groundwater monitoring wells are located around the periphery of the pond area of the Old Landfill. Soil and groundwater samples were analyzed for VOCs, SVOCs and RCRA metals. The results of the groundwater samples indicated detectable concentrations of benzene, toluene, 1,3,5-Trimethylbenzene, tert-butylbenzene, 1,2,4- Trimethylbenzene, 4-Isopropyltoluend, pentachlorophenol and naphthalene. Barium, lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium and silver were detected in soil and groundwater samples. In soil, arsenic and chromium concentrations exceeded the DEC Method Two cleanup levels for direct contact and migration to groundwater. In groundwater, lead concentrations exceeded DEC Method Two groundwater cleanup levels.

Former Use: Historically, this dump site was used as early at 1953. The Old Landfill site which is located in Section 27, Township 37 South, Range 59 West, Seward Meridian was conveyed from the Bureau of Land Management BLM to the Alaska Peninsula Corporation on December 12, 1979 as native selection lands under ANCSA. On March 11, 1982, the land was conveyed from the Alaska Peninsula Corporation to the City of Port Heiden.
