Additional Property Attributes

The property is situated along Black Creek upstream of the Walkers Chapel Road bridge and approximately 1.1 miles upstream of the confluence of Black Creek with Five Mile Creek FMC. Operations at the site reportedly included deep coal mining with later surface strip coal mining. The property is currently owned by Mr. C. Rogers and comprises vacant undeveloped wooded land.

Former Use: The property consists of approximately 32 acres extending along Black Creek upstream from the Walkers Chapel Road bridge and was formerly a mining site. This land is heavily wooded and has not been mined in a number of years. An old mining road appears to be frequented by recreational trail vehicles. The site was a former mining area. Most of the site was covered by heavy woodlands adjacent to Black Creek. Interviews with local residents indicate the area was the site of a NicklePlate Mining Company mine. Long time resident of Walkers Chapel Road, Harry Kelley, provided detailed information concerning the site Kelley. A large spring on the property discharges from the hillside near Black Creek. This spring was utilized by residents of Coalburg during the early 1900s as a source of pure water for drinking and washing clothes. The property is reported to be part of 10,000 acres sold by James Warren Vann during the 1870s for the purposes of coal mining Weeks. Many of these enterprises were first operated by John Milner and his family in late 1800s
