Additional Property Attributes

Assessment performed on nearby/adjacent properties in 2001 found Fe, Cd, Pb, Pesticides, Arclor 1260 in groundwater. The subject site was identified as a potential source. A Phase I ESA completed in June 2011 per ASTM E1527-05 found RECs associated with the subject site's previous land use as a metals allocation/recycling/scrap facility. The historic use included petroleum storage/use/handling, as well as battery recycling with potential land-fill associted with the metals/battery recycling. Off-site RECs included adjacent and nearby petroleum storage and industrial facilities and an adjacent railroad property. Phase II ESA activities found that soils from land surface to approximately two feet bls was found to be impacted by PAHs (particularly BaP equivalents), PCBs, OCPs, and/or metals at locations throughout the site. Concentrations of contaminants found just below two feet bls were usually detected at much lower concentrations than at the land surface to 2-foot bls interval.Groundwater sample results from the Phase II ESA identified low levels of VOCs, TRPHs and PAHs from some of the wells sampled, but at concentrations below their respective GCTLs. Thus, despite the high levels of several metals, BaP equivalents, PCBs, dieldrin, and alpha-BHC, groundwater does not appear to have been impacted above GCTLs for most of these constituents. Iron iron, aluminum, lead, cadmium, manganese, lead, and zinc were detected to be above GCTLs. Iron and aluminum GCTL exceedences were the most common metals encountered in groundwater samples. Supplemental Phase II activities were recommended.

Former Use: The site has been used as a scrap yard from the 1930s through the mid-1980s, when it was closed. The property has been vacant since the mid-1980s. Operations at the site included battery-casing cracking/lead recycling, the use of diesel-fueled smelters for ferrous (iron) and non-ferrous (lead, copper, and aluminum) processing, on-site storage of scrap piles noted in historic aerial photographs at the western portion of the site, and the use of a metal shearer/cutter located near the northern portion of Parcel B. The scrap yard operations were served by a rail line located between Parcels A and B since at least 1940 (Cardno TBE, 2011). The property is currently vacant and without buildings.
