Former Use: The site consists of a two story brick building that has a parking lot on the east side, along with parking access on all four sides. The subject property also has a gazebo, land markers and structures, with multiple seating benches, trash barrels, and sidewalks. The building is approximately 6,943 square feet first floor is 3,465 square feet and the second floor is 3,478 square feet and is currently occupied and used as the Cherokee Nation Courthouse. The property also serves as a tourist attraction and recreational use. These wooden structures, which housed the offices of elected officials and quarters for legislators when in session, were all destroyed by fire during 1865.The National Capitol was built on the ashes of the Cherokee government's log cabin offices that were burned during the Civil War. In 1865, Stand Watie and his troops burned the Council structures on Capitol Square. The construction for the Capitol building started in 1867 and was completed in 1869 during the term of Principal Chief Lewis Downing. The building was first constructed to house the National Senate and Council, Executive Department, Supreme Court and Superintendent of Schools.
