Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Luna Lodge was built in 1950 during the golden age of Route 66 tourism. One of the best remaining examples of a largely unaltered tourist motor court along Route 66, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. After a period of vacancy, the property was remediated for asbestos in 2012 by the nonprofit agency NewLife Homes, Inc. under an ARRA BCRLF sub-grant awarded by the NM Environment Department. NewLife Homes then rehabilitated the former motel into a 30-unit apartment complex that now provides affordable housing for previously homeless residents and residents with special needs. The new facility, which opened 2013, includes a community room and a training kitchen that serves as a small business incubator and a resource for residents interested in learning food industry skills. The redevelopment preserves the historical significance and Pueblo Revival style architecture of the original Luna Lodge.
