Additional Property Attributes

The Former Greenawalt-Trenor facility is located in the heart of downtown Springfield. The property was most recently used for cold storage and warehouse space. The facility was plagued with friable asbestos and had PCB contamination. The City of Springfield and National Trail Parks and Recreation identified the property as the location for the new Multi-purpose Family Ice Arena. After conducting environmental assessments at the property and developing a remedial action plan, the City applied for Clean Ohio Revitalization Funds to address asbestos abatement, demolition, and remediation. The acquisition of the land (provided by National Trail Parks and Recreation District) served as the required 25% match. The property was remediated and demolition occurred. During the last parts of demolition, when the contractors were pulling floor slabs and foots, it was discovered that previously additional buildings had been demolished on the property. The building material was left in the basement voids and covered over. The area had been used mostly for parking over recent years. The property now stands ready for the development of the $5,000,000 Ice Arena. The City of Springfield expects to file a No Further Action Letter at the beginning of 2007 for the property and receive a Covenant Not to Sue under the Ohio Voluntary Action Program. (PPF-Former Greenawalt, Trenor Complex, 11/16/06)

Former Use: The former Greenawalt/Trenor Company operated from the end of the 19th century into the 20th century. The complex was used for various manufacturing and commercial functions including a linseed oil production facility, an underwear production facility, an auto dealership, a coal year, tanning shop, and sundry other uses in the heart of downtown Springfield. A private owner purchased the property in the mid 1979a and began using the facility for cold storage and warehousing. The property was filled to capacity with drums of various contents and other trivial materials, including pallets of old police uniforms. The City of Springfield, along with National Trail Parks and Recreation purchased the property through an option agreement negotiated with the private owner and a local developer. The property has been prepared for the National Trail Parks and Recreation District Multi-Purpose Family Ica Arena.
