Additional Property Attributes

The Harrison Center will be the first "green" higher education facility of its kind in St. Louis City. It has been designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED gold certification, the second-highest achievable as designated by the U.S. Green Building Council. Cleanup certification will likely not be designated until 2011, as a year of groundwater monitoring is required. The proposed remedial work includes excavation and disposal of soil contaminated by lead a cap consisting of pavement or soil to be placed over the area with benzoapyrene in surficial soils and a passive vapor barrier system to be installed in the eastern portion of the building to reduce risk associated with indoor inhalation of vapors associated with benzene and TPH-GRO identified in the subsurface soils near the building.

Former Use: On May 21, 2009, SLDC approved a resolution to subgrant an amount up to 200,000 to St. Louis Community College for remediation of the site. Classes began in St. Louis Community College's new William J. Harrison Education Center in August, serving as a bridge to higher education at the Forest Park campus, as well as providing job training for residents of north St. Louis City and parts of north St. Louis County. The 31,000-square-foot center was designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design LEED gold certification, the second-highest achievable as designated by the U.S. Green Building Council. Portions of the property before redevelopment had a dry cleaner, gas station, and sheet metal works. Other portions were residential.
