Additional Property Attributes

Fourteen soil samples taken at the property during this assessment were field screened for petroleum hydrocarbons using a photoionization detector. The screening results did not indicate the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons above DEC's cleanup levels. This finding agrees with the results of a 2000 preliminary assessment by EPA's Region 10 Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team [START]. The START analyzed one sediment sample and two soil samples from the property for SVOCs, VOCs, pesticides/PCB, total metals, and DRO. While the samples,in total, did test positive for DRO, two VOC analytes, four SVOC analytes, and five metals, none of the contaminant concentrations were above DEC cleanup levels.

Former Use: The property is located in Section 16, Township 25N, Range 19W, Kateel River Meridian at 67.5584, -162.9742. The property was used as a dumpsite until 1995. The property is eroding into the Noatak River. In 2010 the community excavated much of the river bluff edge, relocating exposed debris to the new landfill. Some large debris, such as concrete-encased water and sewer piping, was left in the river and remains as a boating hazard. New gravel was added as backfill where the bluff was excavated.
