Additional Property Attributes

The Site consists of one rectangular-shaped 1.054-acre paved lot located off Montello Street between Crescent Street and White Avenue in Brockton, Massachusetts. The majority of the property is paved and currently used as a public parking lot. The northern, eastern, and southern edges of the Site are unpaved and consist of dense, overgrown vegetation. A former rail line exists off-site along the eastern Site boundary. The easterly flowing Salisbury Brook transects the Site from the northwestern Site corner to the mid-eastern Site boundary by way of an underground manmade culvert constructed primarily of dry-laid granite slabs. Former Use: Between at least 1885 and 1974, the Site was operated by a shoe factory which likely used numerous types of hazardous materials including, but not limited to engine oils, petroleum, solvents, degreasers, lubricants, adhesives, etc. Accordingly, historic land use of the Site presents some risk for past undocumented releases of oil and/or hazardous substances. Historical sources indicate multiple buildings associated with past shoe manufacturing operations formerly occupied the Site. These structures included a coal shed, lumber house, carpenter shop, and nail tempering forge. Other former Site buildings identified included a residential dwelling on the southern portion of the Site between 1885 and 1893. These structures no longer exist. Former street addresses for portions of the Site have included 248 and 254 Montello Street.
