Additional Property Attributes

2002: A tunnel was identified beneath the Property which extends from the former VA Hospital main building on the west to the former power house to the east. It is likely that the tunnel contains asbestos pipe insulation. If future development requires disturbance of the tunnel, it may be necessary to sample and potentially remove the asbestos-containing materials. If present, the removal of asbestos-containing materials must be designed by a licensed asbestos consultant. Former Use: Our House is a charitable non-profit organization that provides shelter and training for the homeless. The Property is developed with two homeless shelters, one training/daycare center and three storage buildings.

2018: When soil and groundwater contamination was found, Pulaski County Brownfields provided Our House with a $150,800 subgrant, funded through an EPA Brownfields RLF grant, to remove contaminated underground storage tanks and soil. Two 29,660 gallon USTs and one 13,746 gallon UST were removed, as was 576 tons of contaminated soil and 60,655 gallons of diesel fuel. Clean back fill was used and the site graded to drain with erosion and storm water control put in place. Cleanup funding was 100% provided by the EPA Pulaski County Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund Subgrant. Once cleaned up, the $5.1 million development of the Our House Children's center was safely underway. The Our House Children's Center now serves over 150 children each day and has helped 97% meet developmental milestones on the state childcare licensing agency's "Kindergarten Readiness Checklist. The families served by Our House can now link hope for better life opportunities with the new Children's Center.

2022 update: Our House has been awarded a $2,600 subgrant for asbestos abatement in one of the buildings on their campus. Since 2002, Pulaski County Brownfields and Our House have partnered to redevelop the grounds of the former Little Rock Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital into a campus that would best serve the needs of the organization and the community. Our House Inc. is a 501c(3) non-profit organization that provides Central Arkansas' working homeless with housing, training, and youth programs to help them succeed. This subgrant will provide funding to safely remove asbestos on a small building on campus, which will kick start a major renovation of the Campus. This renovation will double the capacity for children's programs and family housing, provide more space for workforce training, and allow for on-site mental and physical health services.
