Additional Property Attributes

The property was occupied by an armory from 1917 until 1975 when the property was transferred to the town for use as a recreational center. Property has been vacant/unused since 2009. Site is listed with VT DEC due to contamination resulting from a gasoline UST and a fuel oil UST. The renovated building will house the St. Johnsbury History & Heritage Center exhibits, programs and offices. Former Use: Prior to 1917, this site was used residentially and then sold to the State of Vermont in 1916. The Armory building was constructed in 1917 and operated for several decades as such. In 1975 it was transferred to the Town of St. Johnsbury for use as a Community Recreation Center. In 2009 Rec Center use ceased and the building has been vacant since that time. The parcel comprises 0.44 acres and is situated amongst several other historic blocks and buildings on St. Johnsbury?s Main Street. A number of the neighboring buildings are considered community cornerstones, such as the St. Johnsbury Atheneaum Library, the Fairbanks Museum, the St. Johnsbury House, and the North Congregational Church. St. Johnsbury?s downtown is a mixed-use, high density developed area, and the Armory building is served by municipal water and sewer. The building is a three story masonry structure and its footprint covers the majority of the parcel. The remaining ground is entirely paved excluding a small lawn in between the building face and the Main Street sidewalk. Although safe to enter, the building requires significant structural and mechanical repairs. It has also sustained water damage. Site is listed with VT DEC due to contamination resulting from a gasoline UST and a fuel oil UST. The renovated building will house the St. Johnsbury History & Heritage Center exhibits, programs and offices.
