Additional Property Attributes

Title of this property was transferred from Multnomah County to the nonprofit Oregon Sustainable Land Trust in October 2008. Work has now begun, in partnership with nonprofit Groundwork Portland, to transform the site into an educational community youth garden and phytoremediation demonstration project. Unsafe lead levels are confined to a small area. Soil from there will be moved to the back of the property. Regular soil monitoring is integral to the project, approved by the state Department of Environmental Quality. If successful, it would mean similar contamination at other tracts around the country wouldn't need to be hauled away at significant cost and "made someone else's problem," Newman says. Andrea Hamberg, program manager for Groundwork, says a key step under way is asking residents for ideas, including what to grow for food in the safe soil that poses no health risk. A meeting is planned before summer. "People are ready to start planting," Hamberg says. But none of it would have happened without Kelley, whom she calls "a determined and persuasive lady." (PPF- Data Clarification news article from Ernie DeWaters, EPA Region 10, 4/2/09).
