The KDHE conducted a Phase V Brownfields Targeted Assessment (BTA) at 1450 West U.S. Highway 56 in Lyons, Kansas. The Phase V BTA was conducted for the City of Lyons to further assess petroleum and pesticide contamination on the south portion of the hanger which was inaccessible during the previous Phase I and Phase II through IV investigations conducted from 2007 to 2009. Further assessment was necessary to further define the vertical and horizontal extent of the toxaphene and total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination in the hanger. Based on the results from the investigation completed in March 2012, toxaphene was detected in the soil above the KDHE RSK residential soil level. Excavation activities were planned for June 2012.
