Additional Property Attributes

The Italian American Cultural Center of Iowa (IACCI), a non-profit heritage association, has been seeking a location to build a new cultural center on the south side of Des Moines, for historical, interpretive, and community outreach purposes. They would like to consider this site, but they are concerned about the industrial past use of the site, which was primarily used as a construction company storage lot for more than 50 years; the site also had unknown types of fill material, as it is very near the confluence of the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers. IACCI has sought assistance from the IDNR's 128(a) program for environmental assessment to ensure the site is suitable for their intended reuse. They have limited funds at this time, and will not be able to raise funds to build a new center until a definitive building site has been selected. The IACCI determined in December of 2013 that this site was not suitable for redevelopment, due to lack of funding, partners, and sponsors for the intended project.

Former Use: The site has been unused for the last 5 years, but for the prior 70 years it had been the site of a family construction family, known as Gillotti Construction, and most recently, EcoTech contractors. Heavy equipment, construction materials, and above ground fuel storage was prevalent on the site during its operation. A contiguous parcel had a leaking underground storage tank (LUST) investigation completed.
