Additional Property Attributes

Phase I ESA conducted on 4.3 acres on north side of the property. City acquired property after Phase I ESA and added to CMC property. The CMC property was enrolled into the Illinois EPA Site Remediation Program to facilitate site cleanup in 2005. USTFields property, part of the CMC property, cleanup with USTFields Grant from USEPA to IEPA and performed by IEPA contractor. (PPF - CMC Property, 2/8/05) Cleanup of the CMC property is a major demonstration of the commitment made by the City and by US EPA to reduce threats to human health and revitalize the Citys East Side. Cleanup of the property will enable the regional Pecatonica Prairie Path recreational trail to be extended through Freeport, connecting the community with the stateline regional trail network. Additionally, this cleanup will enable the construction of a pedestrian bridge (as part of the trail) connecting the CMC property to Tuttys Crossing Trailhead across the Pecatonica River, creating an important new pedestrian and bicycle connection for Freeport residents. (PPF CMC Heartland Property, 10/31/07)

Former Use: The CMC property is an 18-acre vacant property located along the Pecatonica River. The property was originally owned by the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad and contained rail yard passenger and freight depots and spurs serving coal and lumber businesses in the late 1800s. As time passed, the railroad reportedly leased portions of the property to lumber yards, coal businesses, bulk petroleum distributors, stockyards, beer distributors, icehouses, and grain companies. Historically, a railroad roundhouse was also present on the property. The property was purchased by Adair Asset Management and then the City took title to a portion of the property in 2003 and the remainder in 2004.
