Additional Property Attributes

Site is on the north side of the confluence of the River Des Peres and Mississippi River at the southern tip of the City of St. Louis. Approximately 1700 ft frontage on Mississippi River & 1800 ft frontage on River Des Peres. There are abandoned buildings and a loader on the Mississippi River. The 15 acres east of the RR tracks is the East Parcel and had some iron production in the late 1800s but was mostly used for receiving, loading, and storing of coal and coke. The 25 acres to the west of the RR tracks is where the coke production and coal gasification facilities were located. There is a former wastewater lagoon at the western edge of the West Parcel that is functioning as a wetland and consists of 2.9 acres. The US Army Corps of Engineers has been given a Preconstruction Notification that the planned remediation activities that will result in the loss of the wetlands. In 2009 an archaelogical review was done as well as a flood plan impact study.

Former Use: Former steel & iron works, coke oven/coal gasification. Vacant since 1987. Building removal and asbestos remediation began May 2010. According to the Remedial Action Plan #2 9-11-09, environmental remediation will consist of: removal of impacted onsite soils, removal of residual coal and coke for use as a supplemental fuel, long term in-situ soil remediation, groundwater monitoring, and a minimum of three feet of clean material will be placed across a portion of the site. Institutional and/or engineering controls may be part of the remediation as well. Additionally, historical documentation of the buildings onsite was completed before demolition began. Empowerment Zone funds in the amount of 58,000 were used to purchase Wetland Mitigation Credits, which was the recommended course of action by the Army Corps of Engineers. Institutional and Engineering Controls may still be needed in the future.
