Additional Property Attributes

The property includes 4 historic landfill sites, used for uncontrolled dumping. The landfills were not lined and were subject to recurrent burning. o HLF #1 is the southernmost and most recent of the 4 landfills, and began operations in 1987. The landfill was closed in the late 1990s and is capped with soil and fully fenced. o HLF #2 is located on the east side of Pia Mesa Road across from the northern portion of HLF #1. Reports indicate that this area has been filled by pushing waste materials, likely burned first, into the adjacent arroyo area east of Pia Mesa Road. HLF #2 is the only landfill that is still active and is currently authorized for disposal of yard waste and a separate area for animal carcasses. o HLF #3 is located north of HLF #2 on the eastern side of Pia Mesa Road. This area appears to have been used for waste dumping during the 1960s. The surface of the landfill includes multiple elongated, narrow, shallow ridges, indicative of separate landfill cells. Waste materials evident on the surface are believed to have been exposed by surface erosion and also represented by illegal dumping after the landfill was closed. o HLF #4 is located immediately north of HLF #3. It is referred to as Pamper Hill due to an abundance of diapers and paper wastes. The operational period for HLF #4 is unknown; however, a 1992 Waste Management Plan indicates that activities may have occurred at HLF #4 during the 1960s. Although previous landfill activities are indicated by visible waste in the sidewall of a road cut and wastes exposed by erosion, most surface wastes appear to be from illegal dumping after the landfill was closed.

Former Use: According to available historical data these landfills were active from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. HLF #2, 3, and 4 were surface emplaced, and HLF #1 was trenched. No other historical uses for the site have been identified. The property includes 4 historic landfill sites, used for uncontrolled dumping. The landfills were not lined and were subject to recurrent burning and only partially fenced. These are all tribal lands and Pia Mesa Road is a designated traditionally cultural property for the Pueblo of Zuni.
