Additional Property Attributes

Based on information obtained during TRCs 2013 Phase I ESA, historical Site ownership and operation (as well as adjoining properties) consisted mainly of industrial use. The 0 Emery Street parcel was historically operated as a power generation house for railroad services (c. 1900 through 1944) and sub-station/transformer yard from c. 1944 through 1974. The parcel identified as 146 Emery Street (aka 30 Emery Street) was historically operated as a grinding wheel manufacturing facility from c. 1905 through the late 1980s. Historical uses of the 362 Elm Street parcel included manufacturing and woodworking prior to 1889 through c. 1994.

Former Use: This site occupies a key location on the Westfield River waterfront in downtown Westfield. The site occupies parts of four parcels: 0 Emery Street, 146 Emery Street, 362 Elm Street, and Parcel X-X along the immediate riverfront. The area has a long industrial history. Much of the site was formerly occupied by the Waltham Grinding facility, which manufactured grinding wheels. Other portions of the site have been occupied by a railroad, an electrical powerhouse, and a manufactured gas plant. All structures on the site have been demolished and all properties are currently vacant. The City of Westfield has acquired ownership of the parcels through various means since the 1970s. Projected re-uses of the area as of 2014 include mixed residential/commercial and extension of a nearby bikeway along the immediate riverfront and possible the former railroad right of way.
