Additional Property Attributes

Plans for this site include a 10,000 sq. ft. community garden on a western portion of the Oliver Elementary school grounds. The garden is being developed in partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation's(PP&R) Community Gardens Program, staff at Oliver Elementary, Centennial School District, and Metropolitan Family Services (SUN Program). The Community Gardens Program is required to investigate all proposed garden areas prior to fundraising to ensure the health and safety of community members. They approached the Brownfield Program for assistance and received 100 percent funding for the Phase I ESA. Results from the ESA did not reveal any recognizable environmental conditions (RECs). East Portland is currently underserved by the Community Gardens Program and they are looking for potential sites for future gardens that will serve the Centennial neighborhood and other communities in outer east Portland. Each community garden will provide 50 -70 plots for families helping to promote food security, self-sufficiency, and healthy diets. The gardens will also serve as a conduit for community connections and outdoor recreation. The Gardens Program is very successful and continues to bring needed amenities to Portland neighborhoods. Over 44 community gardens exist throughout the City of Portland and 6 were constructed within the past year.

Former Use: The Lynch School District acquired this property in 1959 and later became the Centennial School District. Prior to being a school, this property was a small private airport. Common contaminants associated with an airport include petroleum based contamination and heavy metals.
