Additional Property Attributes

This building was once the home to the Phoenix Pharmacy, built, owned, and operated by John Leach who lived with his wife on what is now the Leach Botanical Gardens. During its operation, the pharmacy was centered at the core of the community, considered a gem, and attracted many people to the area. The last business to operate in this building, a video and electronics store, closed around 13 years ago. The property since then has remained vacant attracting vandalism and other nuisance to the site. The current owner, Robert Buck Froman, purchased the building in 1999 with plans to restore this historic building but for several reasons the project never came to fruition. Bucks son Matt Froman is now interested in purchasing the building in order to give the project new life. Matt Froman has started a website for the project called Foster the Phoenix and can be viewed at http://fosterthephoenix.com/. Matt plans to bring the building back up to code, restore the architectural features, and incorporate green design into the project. Once complete, Matt envisions the space becoming a restaurant and blues bar on the ground floor, office space upstairs, and the back warehouse and basement as storage. However, plans on the future use of the building are not set in stone as Matt is interested in getting as much community feedback and citizen involvement before proceeding with final plans. He realizes that this building is one of the key landmarks in the Foster area and strives to bring the site back as a central hub for the neighborhood. Matt Froman contacted the Brownfield Program for assistance with a Phase I site assessment needed prior to seeking financing for the project. The Phase I did not reveal any recognizable environmental conditions from previous uses. However, because the building was constructed in the 1920's there was evidence of asbestos containing materials that will need to be addressed during renovation.

Former Use: This building was once the home to the Phoenix Pharmacy, built, owned, and operated by John Leach who lived with his wife on what is now the Leach Botanical Gardens. Other businesses to operate out of this space include a video and electronics store. The site is currently being used as storage for Mr. Froman's stove and antique business.
