Additional Property Attributes

The east and southeast adjoining Howard University hospital complex at 2041 Gerorgia Ave., NW tographically cross gradient to the Site and had been identified on the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). This in conjunction with the fact that the historical use of the site as a tannery, a swimming pool, a commercial bakery, LUST cases associated to Howard University, numerous adjoining and adjacent properties of concern which include gas stations, commercial or govermental garages, commercial businesses that utilized USTs could be an obvious reason to consider this property as a potential Recognized Environmental Condition (REC).

Former Use: The property is located southwest of the intersection of Georgia Avenue NW and W Street, NW in the District of Columbia. The site is zoned for mixed use and consisting of commercial buildings, parking lots and the Howard University campus and hospital complex. The site is currently vacant but is developed with a slab-on-grade commercial building with two and three-story office space at the southern and the majority of the eastern pertions of the building, and single-story garage space at the northern and northwestern portion of the building. The building has a painted brick facade and a flat rubber membrane roof. Historical Sanborn Fire Maps dated from 1988 to 1998 and the City directory listings revealed various use that include commercial and residential. It should be noted that the Site was used as a tannery from1988 through 1904, and was redeveloped as a large swimming pool and bath house by 1928. Sometimes between 1928 and 1959, the site was redeveloped with the current site building which was used by the General Baking Co. from 1939 through 1960, the Bond Baking Co. in 1970 and several Howard University administrative uses from the 1980 through at least 2008. The Site is currently owned by the Howard University.
