Additional Property Attributes

DEQ performed a phase II and asbestos project design on this property to get it shovel ready, so Greer County Economic Development could apply for EPA grant funding for cleanup. DEQ ended up awarding them a subgrant from its RLF and cleaning up the property under that grant. See ACRES ID 174442 for cleanup information.

Former Use: The Hotel Franklin was designed by Layton Hicks and Forsyth, a noted architectural firm from Oklahoma City. McMillian and Shelton, contractors from Enid, Oklahoma, were hired to build the hotel. The 30,000 square foot, 5 story hotel opened on August 15, 1929. The hotel remained open until 1986. During prohibition, the hotel had a speakeasy in it's basement with an underground passageway for customers to enter the speakeasy in a inconspicuous manner. Over time the hotel deteriorated. Greer County Economic Development Authority purchased the hotel in 2004 with the dream of redeveloping it.

According to the Subgrant Agreement Memo: the quasi-governmental entity (development authority) plans to renovate the hotel for senior housing, apartments, social functions, restaurants, businesses and a banquet hall. The status of redevelopment: the building is still for sale. k.s.
