Additional Property Attributes

The Site is currently a two story building with a dirt parking lot to the south and behind the building vacant with grass and soil ground-cover. According to the Colorado Cultural Resource Survey Architectural Inventory Form, D. L. Taylor was the original owner of the building and completed it in 1906 specifically to house the Jamieson House Furnishing Company, which was eventually named the Jamieson Department Store. Ownership and use of the building by the Jamieson Department Store did not change until 1989, when the property was purchased by the Arthur Roy Mitchell Memorial Museum. A.R. Mitchell Memorial, Inc., the official title of the Museums owner and operator, continues to own the building. A Las Animas County deed dated May 31, 1990, indicates ownership transfer from the City of Trinidad to A. R. Mitchell Memorial, Inc. It is possible, therefore, that between department store and museum ownership from 1989 to 1990 the building was temporarily owned by the City. Despite this brief ownership change, a unique aspect of this Site is that it was continuously used as a department store for over 80 years followed by over 20 years as a nonprofit museum which is still functioning today.
