Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: In 1886, a 36 mile railroad branch, which includes this 3.29-mile corridor, was constructed from Laurens, SC to Greenville, SC, with a freight depot located in downtown Greenville at the northern terminus. The rail line operated freight and passenger services until the mid-1950s when passenger service was discontinued. In 1999, RailTex reached an agreement with the Greenville County Economic Development Corporation (GCEDC) to purchase both sections in their entirety. The G&N was converted to the Swamp Rabbit Trail walking/bike trail while the southern portion, including the 3.29-mile corridor, was operated by the Carolina Piedmont Railroad, under contract by the GCEDC, as railcar storage. In June 2005, the GCEDC requested approval from the Surface Transportation Board (STB) for the abandonment and discontinuance of the rail lines including the 3.29 mile corridor. The STB granted approval in October 2005 under the Rails to Trails Act, and the corridor has been unused since.
