Additional Property Attributes

The City of Strawberry Point sought to acquire the site, demolish the former feed mill and agricultural supply business building, and then construct a new emergency management service center for police and fire/rescue offices and emergency vehicles. However, concern over potential environmental impacts from past uses, and associated health risks, liability, and costs were hindering the City from proceeding. 128(a) funds were used for an environmental due diligence process and asbestos inspection services. The only environmental impact of any concern was a significant amount of asbestos in the building's structure. Upon the city's acquisition of the property in November of 2015 a 128(a) cost share clean up grant was awarded to abate the asbestos. The City will proceed with final demolition of the building in March 2016.

Former Use: The property was used for a creamery and agricultural supply and feed mill operation since the late 1800s. Yoder, Inc. had operated the facility as far back as the 1950s, until sale of the property and business to Strawberry Point Feed & Grain, Inc. in 1997. The City then purchased the property in November 2015.
