Additional Property Attributes

The dam is currently inactive. There is debate on whether the dam should be removed for the purpose of improving fish habitat/passage and other water quality benefits. Those in opposition enjoy the recreation benefits the dam creates. A redesign proposal involves reactivating the dam with the addition of a fish passage. In order to add a fish passage the sediment that will be released needs to be sampled.

Former Use: The Property is located in Swanton Village, which is in the Town of Swanton, within a mixed-use, developed area of residential, commercial, and industrial land. The current dam on the Property was built circa 1929 to replace an earlier heavy timber dam, which had been in place since the late 18th century. The area surrounding the dam, which is also known as Swanton Falls, has supported a variety of activities. Among the industries once powered by the dam were sawmills, gristmills, marble mills, woolen mills, tanneries, iron works, and ammunitions manufacturing. Since the dams construction in 1929 all but one former mill building has been demolished.
