Additional Property Attributes

The Benwalt Hotel is located in downtown Philadelphia, Mississippi and is part of the Downtown Philadelphia Historic District. The facility is located in the southwest quarter of Section 13, Township 11 North, Range 12 East of the Philadelphia, Mississippi 7.5-minute United States Geological Survey (USGS) Topographic Map, 1962. More specifically, the site is located at 234-238 Byrd Avenue, Philadelphia, Mississippi. The target property was first developed as The BenWalt Hotel in 1927 by Howell Construction Company of Philadelphia, a firm owned by partners Ben Howell and Walter Perry. It remained operational as a hotel into the 1970s. Around 1980, a Quonset-type barrel roof was added that affected its historic significance. Because major changes were made to the building after the 1960s, the BenWalt was listed as a non-contributing element in the Downtown Philadelphia Historic District. In 2005, the hotel was finally listed on the National Register for its national significance for its role in the murders of James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner. The BenWalt housed the dozens of reporters who flooded into town following the disappearances in 1964 and is located near the historic jail cell that held the three civil rights workers.
