Additional Property Attributes

Additional Phase 2 Assessment is required.

Former Use: The property consists of approximately 0.5 acres of land and is occupied by one approximate 1,500 square foot wooden structure which is present at the northeastern corner of the property. The property is believed to have been developed in the mid 1800?s at which time it was used as a general store and post office. Over time an additional structure was built along the western portion of the property near the Black Creek which was reportedly used as a tin shop, hardware store, post office, and barber shop. A livery stable was reportedly present behind the building at one time. The property lies within the old industrial core of the Town of Sheldon and was once surrounded by various industrial uses including a grist mill, starch factory, woolen mill and saw mill to the north/northwest, a creamery to the south and railroad tracks and depot to the east. A significant fire reportedly occurred in 1932 which impacted the property and the nearby buildings and bridge. The area and property was restored following the 1932 fire at which time the current building was constructed over the old foundation and continued to be used as a general store. It is believed at some time following the reconstruction gasoline began to be dispensed at the property for retail sale. Local residents recall seeing a gasoline pump along the northeastern portion of property in the 1960?s.
