Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: Built in 1901-2 as the Pope Tin Plate Company, the facility began rolled tinplate in 1902. In 1911, Weirton Steel Corporation acquired the facility. During World War II, the steel industry adapted to help the nations war effort. In 1942, the War Production Board appealed to the steel industry to devise plans to increase and tailor output for army use. When the War Production Board ordered a reduction in tin-plate operations, Weirton Steel, now part of the National Steel Corporation, shut down Steubenville plant in October 1942. Reopened after World War II, the facility ceased operations by the end of 1981.
