IDNR 128(a) assistance was used to provide a certified ACM inspection, and to identify potential hazardous materials that were stored in barrels in the building, as well as deposited/disposed of within the basement in piles of 'sediment'. The City took title to the site under Iowa's 'abandonment clause' in IAC Ch. 657A; however, they are still determining what cleanup approaches they will take for remediation of the known asbestos and identified HazMat that is in the building.

Former Use: The building at the site was constructed in 1929, and has been used as a warehouse, with the last operation being a welding supply operation; however, the operation was discontinued by about 2000, and in 2001 an illegal methamphetamine laboratory operation was raided by law enforcement. The building has been vacant since that time, and the City sought to take title to the property to demolish the building and prepare the site for economic redevelopment.
