Additional Property Attributes

Travis County wants to use this 72-acre site as a pilot project for urban agriculture to expand farmland. The site is in east Austin and eastern Travis County, where many residents suffer from food insecurity and food desert conditions. Travis County aims to convert this underutilized parcel into a productive sustainable farm that increases access to healthy food and develop a food hub concept to satisfy demand for sustainable food while supporting small food businesses and reducing barriers to farming within Travis County as part of its Farm to Food Initiative. Additionally, they intend for this property to provide educational outlets for sustainable agriculture, increase the practice of environmentally sensitive farming in Travis County, and stimulate the regional food economy. Travis County acquired the land on 8/24/1994 from the State of Texas, and the property has remained undeveloped since the purchase. This area has a long history of agriculture, the site was used for farming from the 1940s until the 1980s. The Phase I ESA identified miscellaneous debris from the neighboring Travis State Jail, an unidentified 55-gallon steel drum, and historical pesticide/herbicides related to the agricultural use. A Phase II Limited Site Investigation was requested, and the proposed farm parcels were investigated for pesticides and herbicides to determine if it is appropriate to have members of the public farming the parcels and consuming the produce grown there. The Field Sampling Plan was submitted and approved in March (QTRAK 19-193). Analytical results did not return any exceedances, no issues are anticipated for the intended use. No further work is necessary at this time. In September 2018, Travis County Commissioners approved $125,000 in infrastructure funds for the Walnut Creek Pilot Farm project. A feasibility study was completed to examine the challenges and opportunities that a Central Texas Food Hub project would face. Sustainable Food Center, a local nonprofit dedicated to supporting the local food system and the health of Central Texas residents through gardening classes and education, through a grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service (AM170100XXXXG089) for the study.
