Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The property is an approximately 2.1 acre rectangular shaped tract of land. The former Wechsler School is comprised of an approximately 22,000-sqaure foot building located on the northern portion of the property. The southern portion of the property is comprised of an asphalt parking area and sports court. The majority of the property not occupied by buildings, parking, and sports court are grass covered. The earliest available historical record is a 1912 fire insurance map that shows the property being developed as a school with a single school building, two water closets, and a coal house. The 1950 fire insurance map indicates the property is the Wechsler Public School and shows the 1914 addition to the south of the original building and a small classroom building on the eastern portion of the property. The 1967 fire insurance map indicates the property is the Wechsler Junior High School and shows the original building, the southern addition, and the 1951 addition on the eastern side of the other two school buildings. The original building was reportedly constructed in 1894 and operated as a school until approximately 1983. The property is currently vacant, but has at times been operated as a community center and museum since 1984. No RECs were identified; however, a non-profit wishes to redevelop (including renovations) and therefore needed an asbestos inspection and cost estimates for abatement activity. An Asbestos Inspection was conducted and the non-profit is now evaluating grant opportunities through the Dept. of Archives and History for redeveloping the property.
