Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The Woolson Block Redevelopment is the rehab of a vacant historic mixed -use building located at the center of downtown Springfield, Vermont on the corner of Main Street and Park Street. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places within the Springfield Downtown Historic District. Built c. 1868 by Amasa Woolson, president of the Woolson Machine Company, Horace W. Thompson and Frederick Parks. Originally built in 1868 for commercial use, it has had various additions and modifications in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior remains largely intact, but in interior has been heavily modified. In recent times the upper two floors had been rental apartments and the main floor commercial uses. Work on the building continued to be sporadic and eventually stalled, and the building became a nuisance on Main Street in town and a burden on the police department, who were regularly responding to illegal activities in the building. In early 2016, The building was closed by the Vermont Division of Fire Safety for code violations, and fell vacant. The building was purchased by Springfield Housing Authority in October, 2016 and is partnering with Housing Vermont to redevelop the building using a mix of private and public financing. The Woolson Block is featured as one of the priority buildings in the Downtown Master Plan (2015) that would benefit from redevelopment.
