Additional Property Attributes

The City of Austin obtained this property through an imminent domain/condemnation hearing. The Phase I ESA was completed as part of the City's due diligence. Recognized Environmental Concerns were not identified on the property, and no further action was needed. The historic Rural Negro School building is located on this property, and is particularly important to the Montopolis Community, which is fighting the rapid displacement and gentrification of their neighborhood. The building was a former Army barracks that was repurposed to be a school from the 1930s to early 1960s. The one-room schoolhouse was used to educate African-American children during the Jim Crow era. It was used as a Church of Christ but then sat vacant for many years. The community wants to see the building preserved and kept as a museum to document the history of the neighborhood. This property offers a unique education and perspective since it is very rural in character, and reflects the neighborhood character that many community members grew up with. The City's Parks and Recreation Department plans to renovate the abandoned building for use as a cultural center, and will work with the community on a master plan to help guide the future uses.
