Additional Property Attributes

Pulaski Iron Co operated on-site late 1880s-1930s. Aust family purchased property in 1960s and operated auto salvage & scrap metal yard (Gem City) until 2005. Portions of the property also used as auto repair garage (1950s), Appalachian Power (1989), Southern States (2002-2005), Cycle Systems scrap yard (2010-14). Currently vacant. RECs include impacts related to historical use as iron company, auto salvage, scrap yard, agricultural feed & chemical supply store, auto repair shop, railroad spur. Lead batteries & PCB-containing transformers may have been on-site while scrap yard operated. Used motor oil release in 2012; 20 tons of petroleum-impacted soil removed. VDEQ closed case, but residual petroleum-impacted soil left in place. Independent soil & groundwater assessment in 2006 indicated TPH & lead present in shallow soil. Phase II: GW: Only Mn detected above MCL/tap water RSL. Minimal impact. No potential vapor migration. Soil: Detections of As, Co, Mn, and Th likely naturally occurring. Detections of iron, lead, and PCBs likely related to previous on-site operations. Conditions in soil are typical for industrial urban soil. Worker health & safety should be taken into account during site development based on constituent concentrations observed and the potential for unidentified hot spots particularly relating to lead, petroleum-impacted soil & vapors, & PCBs.
