Additional Property Attributes

Two 7,000 gallon underground storage tanks (USTs), one UST of unknown size, and one 18,000 gallon UST were removed from the adjacent, upgradient property in the 1980s. Due to the ages of the removed tanks and the lack of environmental oversight and sampling during the removals, the potential exists for petroleum related contamination to be present and to have impacted the Hartington Industrial Park site. A Phase II Environmental Site Assessment was completed in July 2020. The assessment consisted of three soil gas samples and two groundwater samples to assess if the former USTs at the adjacent property have impacted the sight. Acetone and toluene were detected in one groundwater sample; however, the concentrations did not exceed the respective Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE) Voluntary Cleanup Program (VCP) Remediation Goals (RGs). Total Extractable Hydrocarbons (TEH) were detected in both groundwater samples; however, the concentrations were below the NDEE Risk-Based Corrective Action screening levels. Soil gas samples reported 26 constituents (mostly petroleum related), but only one, naphthalene, exceeded the NDEE VCP RG for residential exterior soil gas in two of the three samples; no industrial RGs were exceeded. The VOCs detected are petroleum-related compounds, and the likely source is the adjacent, upgradient UST site to the west. The Hartington Industrial Park site has no recognized environmental conditions associated with its history; therefore, no further investigation is recommended for the subject property at this time. The NDEE has referred the western source property to the Petroleum Remediation Section for further assessment and possible remediation.
